Endelyn Boscawen

Incised Harbours in Chalk Geometry

Endelyn Boscawen is a fictional Cornish modernist imagined as having grown up between Truro china-clay country and the working harbours of Newlyn and St Ives. Her studio practice turns domestic vessels into coastal markers, arranging cups and bottles until their rims echo piers, slipways and island horizons. Influenced by spare postwar abstraction and Cornish craft traditions, she builds paintings slowly through sanding, scoring and repainting, seeking the point where a table edge becomes a sea wall.

Endelyn Boscawen's pictures make table-tops behave like headlands: jugs, goblets and bowls overlap with harbour walls, masts and tide-lines in a quiet architecture of pale planes. Scraped chalk paint and incised drawing give each work the feeling of a weathered relief, part still-life, part map, part window onto a distant Cornish quay.

  • Folk marine painting and hand-lettered quay signs
  • Weathered stone, slate, pewter and domestic pottery

Signature features

  • Overlapping table-top vessels aligned with a distant harbour horizon
  • Incised white or graphite outlines cut into chalky scraped paint
  • Flattened, shallow-relief geometry with minimal cast shadow
  • Goblet rims echoing moons, buoys, portholes or harbour basins
  • Table edges doubling as sea walls, quays or cliff ledges
